The Best Bike Ride in Every State, A Fool’s Errand

This quest of mine began in college after a bike ride on Minneapolis trails. I was lying on my couch eating a frozen pizza and reading an article out of Bicycling Magazine titled The Best Bicycle Rides in Every State | Bicycling. As I read the descriptions of cycling around Crater Lake, along the ocean shores of Lopez Island, and up to the top of Mt. Evans, I thought to myself, I must do these rides. So began a journey to do the best bike ride in every state.

Over time the goal shifted from doing the exact recommendations in the magazine, to doing one the best bike rides according to any source I could find (it’s subjective anyway), and finally to what it is today. Just do a fun ride, a jolly route, in every state. When possible, do more than one.

I’ve since expanded the scope even further to add Frozen Treks, Rambles, and Watery Voyages to my original cycling mission. 50 bike rides in 50 states was doable, especially over an entire lifetime. But adding in three additional types of jolly routes? Now that’s a fool’s errand. But I’ll die trying.
